Codec damage as an instrument

Datamosh

Codec damage as an instrument.

Datamosh for Resolume as native FFGL plugins: an effect and a mixer that estimate motion in real time and break it on purpose. Melt, bloom and pixel drag on any source at any resolution, with every stage of the breakage on a dial.

Version 1.0.0 · 24 Sept 2026 · Release notes ↗

The macOS installer needs no Terminal and no password. The zip works too, but macOS quarantines files extracted from a download and Resolume then refuses them without an error, which is why the installer exists.

In action

Melt Input on the left. On Cut catches each hard cut and melts through it until the picture comes back clean.
Bloom While Hold is down the same motion field is applied every frame, so the pattern tears into flowing trails.
Pixel drag Only the two fast discs smear into trails. The still tiles and the slow disc stay sharp.
A Damage group The same footage with Damage at zero on the left, and Motion Lag and Spread turned up on the right.
Two plugins Mosh Transplant applies this layer's motion (bottom right) to the pixels of the layer below (top right).
Works on anything The motion the plugin estimates for itself from ordinary frames: each moving disc picked out, the background at zero.

What it does

Melt

Pixels stop refreshing while motion keeps flowing, so one shot dissolves into the next. The classic transition.

Bloom

Hold the vector field and keep applying it. Motion piles up on itself and the image explodes into flowing trails.

Pixel drag

Only blocks moving faster than the threshold smear; everything still stays sharp. Reads as motion trails rather than collapse.

A Damage group

An accurate motion estimate looks too clean to be a broken codec, so Damage is wrong on purpose. Motion Lag applies vectors from several frames ago; Spread creeps into blocks that never moved.

Two plugins

Datamosh in the effects list, and Mosh Transplant in a layer's blend-mode dropdown, which applies that layer's motion to the layers below.

Works on anything

Resolume plays all-intra codecs, so there are no motion vectors to corrupt. The plugin estimates motion itself, which means cameras and NDI mosh too, and nothing can desync mid-set.

Getting started

  1. Quit Resolume

It only looks for plugins when it starts.

  2. Install

On macOS run the .pkg and tick Arena, Avenue or both. On Windows unzip and copy the DLLs into Documents\Resolume Arena\Extra Effects.

  3. Find it

Datamosh appears in the effects list. Mosh Transplant appears in a layer's blend-mode dropdown, not the effects list.

Worth knowing

Tested against known motion

An automated suite runs every pass in a real headless OpenGL 4.1 context against synthetic footage whose motion is known in advance, so the estimator is checked against the right answer rather than by eye.

Windows 11 Smart App Control

Smart App Control rejects unsigned DLLs silently. It is the one thing that blocks these plugins on Windows; unblocking each file is not needed.
