Datamosh 1.0

Getting started

From a fresh install to your first melt, your first triggered burst and a hands-free transition on every clip change.

This takes about ten minutes. You need Datamosh installed and the trial or a licence running (see Installing), and a clip with plenty of movement in it: a camera move, spinning shapes, water, a generator. A clip with no movement cannot mosh.

Your first mosh

  1. In Resolume, put a moving clip on a layer and play it.
  2. Open the Effects list, find Datamosh and drag it onto the layer.
  3. Look at the output. A fresh Datamosh already moshes gently: Mosh Amount starts at 0.3, so moving areas smear a little. That is on purpose, so you can see it is alive before you touch anything.
  4. Drag Mosh Amount up to about 0.7. Moving parts of the picture stop refreshing and get dragged along by the motion.
  5. Drag it to 1. Nothing refreshes any more; the picture is carried entirely by movement.
  6. Drag it to 0. The output is now an exact copy of the input.
Mosh Amount raised from 0, an exact copy of the input, to 1, where nothing refreshes and the picture is carried by motion alone.

Pick a look

  1. Open the Style dropdown at the top of the panel and choose Melt. A style sets the motion and damage controls in one move. It never touches Mosh Amount, so what you do with the gate stays yours.
  2. Try Bloom, Drag, Liquid and Corrupt. Choose Default to get the factory settings back.

The five looks are described in Look recipes.

Play it

  1. Set Mosh Amount back to 0, so there is room to push.
  2. Press Trigger. The picture moshes for one Burst Length (1 second by default) and then eases back to clean.
Trigger pressed three times at Mosh Amount 0: each press moshes for one Burst Length and then eases back to clean.
  1. Right-click Hold, assign it to a key on your keyboard or a note on your MIDI controller, and tick Piano in the shortcut. Now the mosh lasts exactly as long as you hold the key down.

Playing it live has more on mapping, and on what to do if a key gets stuck.

Melt every clip change, hands off

  1. Remove Datamosh from the layer and add it to the composition instead, so it sees the finished picture of everything you play.
  2. Set Auto Mode to On Cut (Comp). Leave Mosh Amount at 0.
  3. Launch a clip, then launch a very different one. The change melts through by itself, and the picture comes back clean after the burst.

If a change does not fire, raise Cut Sensitivity, which appears under Auto Mode once On Cut is chosen.

Try Mosh Transplant

  1. Put a still or slow, colourful clip on layer 1 and a clip with big, clear movement on layer 2.
  2. Open layer 2's blend-mode dropdown and choose Mosh Transplant.
  3. Raise Mosh Amount. Layer 1's picture is now pushed around by layer 2's movement.

Using Mosh Transplant explains what it can do.
