Datamosh 1.0

Mosh Transplant

The blend-mode version of Datamosh, which moves one layer's pixels with another layer's motion, and the controls only it has.

Mosh Transplant is Datamosh as a blend mode. It lives in a layer's blend-mode dropdown, not in the Effects list. It takes the motion from one input and applies it to the pixels of the other, which is the closest Datamosh gets to what datamoshing originally was: one shot's motion spliced onto another shot's picture.

Mosh Transplant takes the motion of this layer (bottom right) and applies it to the pixels of the layer below (top right), so a still picture is swirled around by another clip's movement.

Its two inputs are the layer it is set on (this layer) and everything underneath it (the layer below). By default this layer supplies the motion and the layer below supplies the pixels.

Mosh

The Mosh section on Mosh Transplant starts with two controls the effect does not have, then carries on exactly as on the effect.

mixVal

Range: 0 to 1. Default: 0.

A slider every FFGL blend mode inherits from the plugin framework. Datamosh does not read it: moving it changes nothing. Use Mix in the Output section for wet/dry. It cannot be renamed or removed without stopping the plugin loading in any host, so it stays.

Motion Source

Options: This Layer, Layer Below. Default: This Layer.

Which input supplies the motion. The other supplies the pixels.

  • This Layer: the clip on the layer you set the blend mode on moves the picture underneath it. Put your motion clip here and your picture below.
  • Layer Below: the other way round. The layers underneath supply the motion, and this layer's clip is the picture that gets moved.

The two inputs do not have to be the same resolution: Datamosh works at the pixel input's size and stretches the motion input to fit. Motion Source also decides where the mask comes from, since the mask is always painted by the motion input.

Mosh Transplant on a spinning layer above a panning one. This Layer: the tiles below are swirled by the spin. Layer Below: the spinning layer's pixels are dragged by the pan.

Everything else

Every other control works exactly as on the Datamosh effect, in the same sections and order: Style, Mosh Amount, Trigger, Hold, Reset, Auto Mode, Cut Sensitivity, Burst Length and Beat Divisor in Mosh, then Motion, Damage, Sync, Output, Mask, Spread, View, Help and Licence. See Datamosh parameters for each one.

A few behave differently because there are two inputs:

  • Motion Threshold, Motion Gain and the Damage controls act on the motion input's movement.
  • Mask Amount is painted by the motion input's brightness, so a moving, bright layer (scrolling text, a generator) becomes both the motion and the stencil.
  • Auto Mode On Cut watches the motion input for cuts.
  • Mix crossfades against the pixel input.

Licence section

Licence

Mosh Transplant has its own Licence field, and it shares one licence with the Datamosh effect: licensing either licenses both. See Licence field.

When Mosh Transplant is locked, it shows its pixel input untouched. With Motion Source on This Layer that is the layer below, so a locked Mosh Transplant layer looks as if the layer has vanished. Check the Licence field's name: it starts Licence: locked.
