FAQ

Short answers about the trial, licences, offline use, platforms, Resolume, controllers and your files.

Buying and the licence

Is Vizz free?

No, Vizz is paid software, with a 30-day free trial that has everything switched on. Buy a licence at letissier.ie/shop.

What happens when the trial ends?

Vizz stops sending its output until you enter a licence key. A copy that's already running is never stopped. The next time you open it, it opens on the licence section, and nothing goes out to Syphon, NDI or a recording. See What happens when the trial ends.

Can I start a second trial?

No, there's one trial per machine.

How many computers can I use one licence on?

One licence runs on 2 machines at a time. To move it, press release this machine on the old one, or release it from your account, then activate on the new one.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, any licence is refunded within 30 days of purchase, with no reason needed. See refunds.

Do I get updates?

Yes, your licence includes updates until the date shown as updates until in the licence section. After that, the version you have keeps working for good. A renewal brings the newer ones.

Does Vizz need the internet?

Only now and then. It goes online to start a trial, to activate a key, to check in about once a day, and to look for updates at launch. Everything else works with no network.

How long can Vizz run offline?

A licence runs offline for 30 days between check-ins, and even past that nothing is restricted. The licence section says Needs check-in until Vizz is next online. For a machine that never goes online, use offline activation.

Will a licence problem ever stop a show?

No. A copy that's running never locks, whatever happens to the licence or the network. A licence problem only ever affects the next launch.

Platforms

Does Vizz run on Windows or Linux?

Not as an installer in 1.0. Vizz 1.0 is a Mac app. It builds from source on Windows and Linux, and sends its output over NDI there. See Windows and Linux.

Does Vizz run on an Intel Mac?

No, the 1.0 release is built for Apple Silicon Macs, on macOS 11 or later.

Does Vizz support Spout?

Not in 1.0. On Windows, use NDI.

Which apps can receive Vizz?

Any app that receives Syphon or NDI: Resolume, VDMX, MadMapper, Millumin, OBS, TouchDesigner and others. See Send it to Resolume.

Using it

Can Vizz send a transparent background?

Yes, set background opacity to 0, and Syphon and NDI get the particles with an alpha channel. See A transparent background.

What's the highest output resolution?

8192 pixels on the longest side. Most rigs use 1080p or 4K. Set it in outputs.

Can I use my MIDI controller?

Yes, any MIDI controller works. Hover a control in Vizz, press learn, and move a knob. The Akai APC40 mkII maps itself when you plug it in. See MIDI.

Can Vizz follow Resolume?

Yes, Vizz can fire its pads when you launch a column in Resolume Arena, and turn its pages when you select a deck. See Follow Resolume's columns.

Can I record what Vizz makes?

Yes, Vizz records the output as a sequence of JPEG or PNG images, which one ffmpeg command turns into a video. See Record a take.

Can I load my own 3D scans?

Yes, drag a .ply, .xyz, .pts or .csv file onto the window. Photos and logos work too, as a coloured relief. See Clouds.

Why doesn't my microphone make the picture react?

A microphone hears the room, not the mix. Feed Vizz the music itself from an audio interface or a loopback such as BlackHole. See Make it react to the music.

Your files

Do I need to save?

No, Vizz saves everything the moment it changes. There's no save button, and quitting loses nothing.

What happens to my work if Vizz crashes?

Vizz puts it back. When it opens again, it restores your show, the look that was on screen and your outputs, and then asks once whether to send a crash report.

Where are my shows kept?

In ~/.config/vizz/projects, one folder per show. See Files and folders.

How do I move a show to another computer?

Copy its folder from ~/.config/vizz/projects into the same place on the other computer. A show carries its own looks, so its pads work there. Then pick it from the show chip.

Does an update touch my shows?

No, shows, looks, patches, MIDI mappings and settings live outside the app, so an update leaves them alone.

Does Vizz send anything about me?

Only what you choose to send. It checks for updates and checks in its licence. Crash reports and feedback are only sent when you say so, and crash reports are off by default. A crash report never includes your shows, looks, sources, licence or email.
