Vizz 1.0
Send it to Resolume
Get Vizz's output into Resolume over Syphon or NDI, layer it with a transparent background, and have Vizz follow Arena's column and deck launches.
Vizz sends its output to other apps as a live video source. On a Mac, Syphon is on from the start and is the quickest way in. NDI works across the network and between computers. Spout, for Windows, isn't in 1.0.
Resolume, VDMX, MadMapper, OBS and TouchDesigner all receive these the same way. This guide uses Resolume Arena.
Syphon
Syphon passes frames between apps on the same Mac with almost no delay and no quality loss.
- Start Vizz. It publishes a Syphon source called vizz straight away. The status strip shows
syphon:vizzwith a green dot. - In Resolume, open the Sources tab and find the Syphon group.
- Drag vizz onto a clip slot and launch it.
Vizz sends at the output size set in outputs, not the size of its window. Set it to your composition size, such as 1080p, so Resolume doesn't have to scale it.
Change the name
If you run two copies of Vizz, or want a clearer name, start Vizz with --syphon-name NAME. See Command line.
Upside down
Vizz sends Syphon frames the right way up. If an app shows Vizz upside down, that app is flipping it itself. Start Vizz with --syphon-flip false.
NDI
NDI sends video over the local network, so Vizz and Resolume can be on different computers, or different platforms.
-
Install the free NDI runtime from ndi.video on both machines.
-
Start Vizz with NDI turned on. There's no switch for it in the panel in 1.0, so on a Mac, run this in Terminal:
/Applications/vizz.app/Contents/MacOS/vizz --ndi -
The status strip shows
ndi:vizzwith a green dot. -
In Resolume, open Sources and find NDI. Drag the Vizz source onto a clip slot.
--ndi-name NAME changes the name receivers see, and --fps N the frame rate announced to them. If the NDI runtime is missing, Vizz carries on without NDI and says so in its log.
A transparent background
To layer Vizz over other clips in Resolume, send only the particles.
- In the panel, open background under CONTENT.
- Drag opacity to 0. The line under it reads transparent — receivers get the field with an alpha channel.
- In Resolume, set the Vizz clip's layer to a blend mode such as Add or Alpha, above your other layers.
Vector layers paint the whole frame. While one is on, the background stays solid, and the panel says so. See Background.
Follow Resolume's columns
Vizz can follow Resolume Arena. When you launch a column in Arena, Vizz fires its scene and gravity pads with the same number. When you select a deck in Arena, Vizz turns to the same page of its set list. One launch moves the video and the field to the same part of the song.
1. Point Arena's OSC output at Vizz
In Arena, open Preferences ▸ OSC. Turn on OSC Output, and set it to send to the computer running Vizz on port 7000. If Vizz runs on the same computer, use 127.0.0.1.
2. Turn following on in Vizz
On the performance layout, switch on resolume at the end of the set list. Following is off until you do, so that stray OSC on a shared network can't change your show.
3. Match the columns
Launch column 1 in Arena. Vizz fires pad 1 on the scene and gravity rows. Column 2 fires pad 2, and so on up to 16.
If a page of pads covers columns further along, right-click its chip and set resolume columns from N. With 9, Arena's column 9 fires pad 1, column 10 fires pad 2, and so on. The chip's tooltip shows the columns each page follows.
4. Match the decks
Selecting deck 3 in Arena turns Vizz to page 3. A deck beyond the last page is ignored. Turning a page never changes the picture by itself. Only the next column launch does.
Troubleshooting
If the source doesn't appear, or the picture is black, see Troubleshooting.
