Vizz 1.0
Troubleshooting
What to check when the output doesn't arrive, the audio doesn't move anything, a controller does nothing, or the frame rate drops.
Start with the status strip at the top of the control panel. It shows the frame rate, a dot for each output, the audio device and the tempo. A red or amber item there is usually the answer.
Output
Resolume doesn't list Vizz
- Check the dot. The status strip should show
syphon:vizzwith a green dot. If it says no outputs, Vizz was started with--no-syphon. - Check the licence. A locked copy publishes nothing until a trial or key is entered. The top of the panel says nothing is being sent until a trial or a licence key is entered. See Licence.
- For NDI, Vizz must be started with
--ndi, and the NDI runtime must be installed on both machines. See NDI. - Restart the receiving app. Some apps only look for sources when they start.
The picture in Resolume is black
- The master fader is down. It reads BLACK at the bottom.
- A punch button is latched on. BLACK stays on after a shift-click until you click it again.
- The background opacity is 0 and the receiving layer ignores alpha. Set the layer's blend mode to one that uses alpha, or set opacity back to 1.
The picture is upside down
Vizz sends Syphon the right way up. If one app shows it upside down, that app is flipping it too. Start Vizz with --syphon-flip false.
The picture is soft or the wrong shape
Receivers get the output size, not the window's size. Set it to match your composition, for example 1080p.
Audio
The audio meters don't move
- Check the input in audio. The dot beside it should be green. not capturing means the device isn't delivering sound.
- On a Mac, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure Vizz is allowed. This covers every audio input, not just the microphone. Restart Vizz after changing it.
- If you use a loopback such as BlackHole, check that your DJ software is actually playing into it.
- Make sure Vizz wasn't started with
--no-audio.
The meters move but the picture doesn't
Nothing is connected to the audio yet. Press react, or add a modulator such as Kick to a fader. See Make it react to the music.
The picture flickers at full all the time
A band's gain is too high, so it's stuck at full. The meter shows a red mark. Play a loud part of a track and press fit.
The tempo is wrong
Detection works best on music with a clear kick. If it's unsure, the AUTO tag turns amber and the clock coasts. Tap T three times on the beat to set it by hand, or follow midi clock from your mixer.
MIDI and OSC
My controller does nothing
- Open midi. If the device isn't listed, unplug it and plug it in again. It connects by itself within a couple of seconds.
- While a MIDI learn is armed, the section shows what it hears (seen: ch1 cc21). If it says seen: nothing yet when you move a knob, the controller isn't sending. Check its own mode or channel settings.
- A control can only drive one thing. If it was bound elsewhere, find it in the bindings list and unmap it.
OSC messages do nothing
- Check the port. Vizz listens on 7000 unless started with
--osc-port. - If Vizz was started with
--osc-bind 127.0.0.1, it only hears this computer. - On a Mac, allow Local network for Vizz in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Resolume's column and deck messages only work while resolume is on in the set list.
Performance
The frame rate is low
Open health:
- If the average frame time is high and p99 is close to it, every frame costs too much. Lower the render scale, then the particle count, then the output size.
- If the average is fine but worst is large, something stalls now and then. Close other apps using the GPU, and check whether a recording is writing to a slow disk.
- Turn off 16-bit float master if it's on.
A recording dropped frames
The disk couldn't keep up. Vizz drops frames from the recording rather than slowing the show. Record JPEG rather than PNG, lower record at, or record to a faster disk. See Record a take.
Files and pads
A cloud file won't load
Vizz loads .ply (ASCII or binary little-endian), .xyz, .pts, .csv, .png, .jpg and .jpeg. Anything else gets a message naming the formats. A damaged file gets a warning and is skipped. It never crashes Vizz.
A pad says its preset no longer exists
The look on that pad was deleted or renamed outside Vizz. Right-click the pad and choose assign preset… to pick another.
My pages and looks have gone
You're probably in a different show. Click the show chip and pick the right one from OPEN.
The panel has disappeared
Press Tab. If Vizz was started with --no-gui, the panel starts hidden.
Rows are missing on the performance layout
The window is too short for them, or view is on. Make the window taller, or press V. See The performance layout.
Licence and updates
The licence says Needs check-in
Vizz hasn't reached letissier.ie for a while. Nothing is restricted. Go online and press check in now, or wait for it to check in by itself.
The licence says Licensed to another machine
The key's seats are in use elsewhere. Release a machine from your account, or press release this machine on the old one. Then press activate here.
The update won't install
The banner says why. The usual reasons are a recording that's running, or Vizz running from Downloads instead of Applications. Use the banner's download link to install by hand if you need to. See Updating.
Crashes
Vizz closed unexpectedly
Open Vizz again. It restores the show, the look that was on screen and your outputs, and asks once whether to send a crash report. If it keeps happening, send the report with a note of what you were doing, or use Send feedback… in Help and feedback.
