Yewee 1.0

Troubleshooting

Black feeds, a missing camera, a panel that won't load, a slow machine, and what the messages mean.

Start with the panel. The status pill and the amber line under the preview say what Yewee knows, and view log in the Process card shows the last 200 lines of the log from any device.

On the machine, --doctor checks the camera, NDI, Syphon or Spout, the models and the panel port, and says what to fix.

Feeds

The mixer doesn't see Yewee's feeds

  • Check the feed is switched on in the NDI column of Outputs, and look for the exact name on the line under the preview.
  • The mixer and the Yewee machine must be on the same network, and NDI discovery must be able to cross it. Some managed switches and Wi-Fi networks block the discovery traffic; try a plain switch, or add the Yewee machine's address by hand in the mixer's NDI settings (NDI Access Manager, or the mixer's own).
  • Windows: Windows Firewall must allow Yewee on this network. If the network is marked Public, mark it Private or allow Yewee for public networks.
  • Mac, macOS 15 and later: allow Yewee in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, then restart it.

A feed is black

  • Pill says NO SIGNAL: the source stopped sending. Check the camera and cable; Yewee retries every three seconds and carries on by itself when it's back.
  • Pill says TRIAL ENDED: enter a licence key in the Licence card.
  • Pill says PAUSED: press Resume in Process.
  • Preview is black too: the source is sending black. For a capture card see Capture cards.
  • Only the Overlay, Faces or Mask feed looks black: it is mostly transparent, and your receiver is showing the transparency as black. Key it, or look at it over a background; see Keying tips.

The feed is frozen

  • Switch on the Test card: if its clock doesn't tick at the receiver, the link is stuck, not Yewee. Switch the feed off and on in Outputs.

A feed is upside down

Switch on Flip upside down in Outputs, in the column for that kind of feed (NDI or Syphon/Spout). The panel preview never flips.

The Overlay has dark edges

Your receiver is treating premultiplied transparency as straight. Look for a premultiplied or linear-key option on the key or layer. See Keying tips.

Receivers disconnected for a moment

Changing Output frame rate makes NDI receivers reconnect. So does Restart. Nothing else in the panel should.

Input

The camera isn't in the list

  • Press ↻ to scan again.
  • Mac: a camera under Cameras (blocked by macOS) needs permission: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, allow Yewee, then restart Yewee.
  • Close any other program using the camera. Most cameras open in one program at a time.
  • A capture card may need its maker's driver. See Capture cards.

"NO INPUT" at launch

The saved source couldn't be opened: a camera unplugged, a file moved. Yewee starts anyway so you can pick another. Choose a source in Input and press Use this source.

An NDI source isn't listed

Its computer must be on the same network, and NDI discovery must reach it (see above). Press ↻. You can type ndi: and part of its name in Custom too; Yewee looks for it for up to ten seconds.

Yewee stopped when the video ended

Loop video files was off. Switch it on in Input before playing a file.

Faces

Faces aren't found

  • Check the preview shows the picture you expect, the right way round.
  • Lower Strictness in steps of 0.05, and raise Search detail. See Tune for small faces.
  • Check Ignore small faces isn't set higher than the faces you need.
  • Light helps more than any setting.

Boxes on things that aren't faces

Raise Strictness, or tap Stage close-up. Posters and printed T-shirts with faces on them are faces as far as Yewee is concerned.

Numbers keep changing on the same people

Raise Hold lost faces, and keep Detector pace at Every frame. If the machine is overloaded, Auto relief may be skipping frames of detection; see below.

Performance

Low fps or high load

The fps chip turns amber when Yewee falls behind the output frame rate, and the load chip when a frame's work nears its time. In order of effect:

  1. Tap Power saver.
  2. Turn off what you don't use: Expressions, the People silhouette cutout (use Soft ovals), feeds nobody takes, Panel preview, Window on the machine.
  3. Lower Search detail.
  4. Set Output size to 1280 or 960 wide.

The Performance card shows where the time goes. Auto relief, on by default, lowers quality for you when load stays over 100%, and says so under the preview.

The machine and the panel feel sluggish

Switch on Limit CPU use in Machine load. Yewee then leaves most of the processor for everything else.

Control panel

The panel won't open on a phone

See If the phone can't reach the panel.

"Reconnecting…"

The panel has lost Yewee. If you pressed Restart, wait a few seconds. Otherwise Yewee has stopped, or the phone has left the network. The panel reconnects by itself when Yewee is back.

"yewee has quit"

Someone pressed Quit, or Yewee was closed on the machine. Start it again on the machine; the panel reconnects.

Starting Yewee just opens the panel

Yewee is already running, and a second start opens the running one. To run two, see Two cameras on one machine.

Crashes

If Yewee closes unexpectedly, start it again: your source, feeds and settings come back as they were, and the panel asks whether to send a report. Run from source with the included launcher, Yewee is restarted for you within a few seconds; the installed app isn't.

If it keeps happening, send a report and use Send feedback… to say what was going on, or look in the log at logs/yewee.log in Yewee's folder.
