FAQ

Short answers about the trial, licences, offline use, what LIGHT runs on, and the questions people ask most.

Licence and trial

How long is the free trial?

The trial lasts 30 days and has every feature, with nothing held back. Start it on the licence screen the first time LIGHT opens: type your email and name, then press Start the trial. See Installing.

What happens when the trial ends?

A show that is open keeps running. The next time you open LIGHT, it shows Trial ended and asks for a licence key. Your shows are kept and open as they were once you enter one.

How many Macs can one licence run on?

One licence runs on 2 Macs at a time. To move it, open Settings ▸ Licence on the old Mac and press Deactivate this Mac, then enter your key on the new one. If the old Mac is gone, free its seat from your account at letissier.ie.

Do I need to be online?

Only to start the trial or activate a key. After that LIGHT works offline. It checks in once a day when it can. After 30 days without a check it says needs to refresh, and still works with nothing restricted.

Can a licence problem stop my show?

No. LIGHT checks the licence only when it opens. Nothing that happens to the licence, the trial or the network while a show is running can stop it.

What does a licence include?

The version you buy is yours to keep and runs for good. It includes a year of updates: anything released in that time. After that LIGHT keeps working and the licence screen says Update window ended. You can renew from your account to get newer versions.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 30 days of buying, no reason needed. See refunds.

Is my show file tied to my licence?

No. The licence lives in the macOS Keychain, never in a show. You can send a show to anyone, and it opens in their copy of LIGHT.

What it runs on

Does LIGHT run on an Intel Mac?

No. LIGHT 1.0 is built for Apple silicon Macs only.

Is there a Windows version?

No. LIGHT is for macOS only.

Do I need Resolume?

No. LIGHT works on its own, with its own pads, a MIDI controller or a tablet. Resolume Arena or Avenue can drive it over OSC. See Follow Resolume.

What hardware do I need to reach the lights?

An Art-Net or sACN node, connected to the Mac by an Ethernet cable, and DMX cable from the node to the fixtures. LIGHT doesn't drive USB DMX interfaces directly.

How many universes and fixtures can it drive?

As many universes as your nodes take: each one is a row in Settings ▸ Output. The show engine runs at 40 frames a second whatever the size of the rig.

Not in 1.0. The link button in the status line is greyed out. Use a MIDI beat clock or Resolume's tempo instead. See Tempo sources.

Using it

Why doesn't anything light up when I open LIGHT?

LIGHT always opens offline, so nothing goes out until you press offline in the top bar to go live. If it is live and still dark, see Nothing lights up.

Do I have to save?

No. Shows save themselves a moment after every change, and keep the last five saved versions as backups. ⌘S saves at once. See Where LIGHT keeps things.

Can I move a show to another Mac?

Yes. Copy its .project.json file from ~/Library/Application Support/LIGHT/projects/ to the same folder on the other Mac. The fixture definitions it uses travel inside the show.

What happens if LIGHT crashes mid-show?

Open it again. It comes back with the show and what was playing, but offline, so the rig doesn't jump. Go live when you're ready. It asks once whether to send a crash report. See Crash reports.

Can I run it from a tablet?

Yes. Any tablet or phone on the same network can open LIGHT in its browser. Pair it from the Mac to control the show. See Run it from a tablet or phone.

Which MIDI controllers work?

Any class-compliant MIDI controller, with MIDI learn. The Akai APC40 mk2 and APC mini mk2 have ready-made layouts. See Map a MIDI controller.

My fixture isn't in the list. What do I do?

Import its GDTF file from the manufacturer or from GDTF Share. For a simple fixture, a built-in generic (dimmer, RGB par, RGBW par, moving head, hazer) often fits. See Patch your fixtures.

What is the difference between a look and a pad?

A look is a stored state of the lights: which groups, what colour, which effects. A pad is a place on the grid that plays a look. The same look can sit on many pads and in many songs, and editing it changes all of them. See Looks.

How do I report a bug or ask for a feature?

Open Settings ▸ Feedback, write what happened and press Send. It includes the LIGHT and macOS versions and nothing about your show.
